Here’s a sneak peek of the yet unrevealed Nokia E63 which displays a very smart photo shop that is convincing enough of its quality. As the rumors go, the phone is supposed to be having a 320 × 240 resolution display, WiFi, Bluetooth, Symbian S60, a micro SD card slot, 3.5 millimeter headphone jack and UMTS/HSDPA.
Apart from this we can expect to see three variations of the model, the E63-1 for the European market, a second, the E63-2 specially designed for those who just do not want to walk around with camera phones staring out of their suit pockets and finally the E63-3 for the Americans.
As nothing has been disclosed yet by Nokia, we have to keep our eyes and ears open for any more news that wafts through the air about the Nokia E63.

Comparing an Apple to a Blackberry; Storm VS iPhone

blackberrystormvsiphone3g.jpg

There has been a big hype surrounding the pre-release of the Blackberry Storm for one simple reason – it is RIM’s first Blackberry phone with touchscreen features. And by having that one feature, the Blackberry Storm was touted as an iPhone killer, if not one of iPhone’s many rivals. The release of the Blackberry Storm also completes the casting of touchscreen phone heavyweights. A few weeks ago, the highly anticipated Google Android Phone was released amidst spectators’ excitement and media hype. Although the Google Android Phone was successful in eliciting good comments and positive reviews, especially coming from the anti-iPhone camp, still there’s something lacking with the Google-powered Android phone that enables it to topple the iPhone. Hence, the Google Android Phone was put in the category of one of ‘em iPhone rival or iPhone killer wannabes. Would the Blackberry Storm suffer the same fate? Would its features and specs be enough to dislodge the iPhone as the most sought after, most popular mobile phone to ever arrive in the industry? Let’s take a look on the details, features, specs and anything and everything about the Blackberry Storm.

Blackberry Storm General Specs and Features:

• Wireless email
• Organizer
• Browser
• Phone
• Camera (3.2 MP)
• Video Recording
• BlackBerry Maps
• Media Player
• Built-in GPS
• Corporate data access
• SMS
• MMS

Just by a quick glance, you could immediately see that there are some features of the Blackberry Storm lacking on the iPhone. More particularly video recording, corporate data access and MMS. The Blackberry Storm supports various video formats such as MPEG4 H.263, MPEG4 Part 2 Simple Profile, H2.64, and WMV. But most importantly it can capture video which the iPhone is not capable of doing. Although the Blackberry Storm may have won this one over the iPhone, rest assured that it will just be a matter of time before a third party developer comes out with a legitimate application which would enable the iPhone to capture video as well. If you’re into Pwnage of the iPhone you should know that this is already available with jailbroken iPhone. But of course, we would not encourage you to do so as it will void your iPhone’s AT&T warranty. The same is true with MMS sending functionality. Again, the Blackberry Storm may have won this over the iPhone because of its native MMS feature; the iPhone however may soon have its third party app which can support this feature. In fact, there was an application that can do this already although it was not a direct MMS sending capability. But in time, we are positive that an application will be developed for this purpose. As for the Corporate Data Access, the Blackberry Storm well with the following email platform/clients:

• BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise
• enterprise email account
• personal email account
• optional new device account

On this aspect, we’ve got to admit that the Blackberry Storm clearly win big against the iPhone. The enterprise support for the iPhone email client is yet to be fully explored and maximized. The best that the iPhone could muster is integration with Lotus Domino via an application which is still under development. For web-based email account though, we all know that the iPhone has a decent integration with web-base email platform such as Yahoo, Gmail, AOL and many more. Wait before you go out and proclaiming that the iPhone is inferior to the Blackberry Storm, be reminded that all Blackberry handsets have these features so it is not really unique with the Storm. For their other differences, the Blackberry Storm has a 3.2 MP camera against the iPhone’s 2.0MP.

Another thing to look into when comparing the iPhone and the Blackberry Storm is their touchscreen features. There’s no doubt that Apple has mastered the touchscreen feature when it comes to their iPhone. And Blackberry certainly could learn a lot from Apple on this department. It would be interesting to know from those who lined up for the Blackberry Storm when it was released by Verizon Wireless last Friday, whether the Storm’s touchscreen feature could match up with the iPhone.

Clearly, these two phones aside from having touchscreen features are two mobile phone bigwigs in their own separate league. The Blackberry Storm or any Blackberry handsets was always been geared for the corporate business professionals while the iPhone is targeted more for the general mobile phone using public. Each of these two smartphones have their respective pros and cons, it’s up to you to decide whether you’d opt for the Apple or the Blackberry.

BenQ - E72 review

BenQ's E72 is an interesting Windows Mobile device. It has unashamedly consumer-friendly looks and packs some consumer-friendly software too. Yet it runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard edition, an operating system more usually found in business oriented smartphones.

This quad-band GSM phone is light at just 90g and has a rather stylish look. Its mostly black fascia is trimmed with red, it has nicely curved edges and the screen has a mirrored finish. If you just glanced at it in passing you'd probably think it was a mid-range, fairly averagely featured handset.

However, checking off the features list, in addition to Windows Mobile we have Wi-Fi which is rare enough in a mid-range handset to cause a raised eyebrow or two. BenQ has also decided to include some handy software in the shape of Mundu. This is a unified Instant Messaging client which works with MSN Messenger, Gtalk, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL and Jabber.

There is more in the way of consumer software to be had, too. A ringtone editor will amuse some, though what you think is a great tone could well annoy others who have to listen to it! A set of tools for travellers gives you access to multiple alarms, a world clock, a to-do list manager, currency conversion and a handy weather forecast checker.

The Today screen has a set of shortcuts to your often used applications, a profiles setting and a shortcut to the Wi-Fi.

The main problem with this phone is its screen. This is very small considering that the E72 is a smartphone. At just 2 inches across diagonal corners its small size makes some of the feats it can accomplish in theory rather less than satisfactory in practice.

One example is Web browsing. With the Wi-Fi on board you can do this freely over your wireless connection, which is a great lure. But it isn't always easy to view Web pages on the small screen.

Battery life is a little on the short side too. You'll probably need to think in the realms of a daily recharge if you want to use this phone's capabilities to the full on a regular basis. And then there is the issue of slow running. We found that at times we had to wait for the phone to respond to key presses. This could become rather irritating in everyday use.

BenQ - E72 features - Verdict

This is a good looking Windows Mobile handset with excellent software for Instant Messaging fans and Wi-Fi for the rest of us. It is hampered by short battery life, a small screen and a slow processor, though.

Sony Ericsson - C902 review

Let's get one thing out of the way right at the start. We found the C902 to be one of the best mobiles we've used for a long time. The combination of features seems just about right and, while there's nothing too flashy going on here, there is some rather good stuff when it comes to photography.

This is a Quad-band 3G handset with HSDPA and a front-facing camera for two-way video calling. The general design is well thought out and the phone feels good in the hand. The 2-inch screen is up to Sony Ericsson's high standards, though it does seem a bit small in relation to the handset itself.

The reason for this is that two bars down the left and right hand side of the screen offer touch sensitive icons when the 5-megapixel main camera is in use. Backlit a subtle deep blue, they offer access to a range of features that you might want to get at quickly.

For example, you can switch from photography to gallery mode and into video mode too. You can change the focus settings quickly, flicking into macro or face detection modes. You can turn on BestPic (the system which sees the phone shoot several shots when you depress the shutter button, allowing you to choose the best to keep). And you can choose scene, set the self timer, use the flash... Well, you get the idea. It works really smoothly and is, for once, a feature that's as useful as it is idiosyncratic.

Of course none of this matters a jot if the camera is poor. There is good news here, as it is up with the best 5-megapixel phones we've seen. For those who need to know where photos were shot, they can be geo-coded too.

As for the rest, well, the almost obligatory accelerometer knows when you turn the phone round and will obligingly flip the screen, and a music player copes well with your tunes. There is 160MB of built-in memory and a Memory Stick Micro card slot for adding more storage.

The side-slotting mains power charger has a through port so you can use the headphones when charging the handset. The end result is cumbersome to look at and is a travesty when compared to the good looks of the phone itself, but it does work. There is a 3.5mm headset connector beyond the microphone on the supplied headphones. Battery life for music playback is, incidentally, astonishingly good.

Sony Ericsson - C902 features - Verdict

This is the best Sony Ericsson handset we've seen for some considerable while. A good all-rounder, the camera features are superb and it is not a burden to carry.

Vertu Signature S hits the FCC, launches in October; ours is on the way

Never one to turn down a Vertu, we’ve just came across Vertu’s latest handset in all its FCC glory. For starters, it has 850MHz/2100MHz 3G support, Wi-Fi, and probably the craziest futuristic design we’ve ever seen. Many Vertu lovers across the globe loved their original Signatures but they were quick to be completely outdated in terms of technology, thus they were “forced” to switch to the Constellation (small and smooth) or the Ascent Ti (huge and feature-packed). Well, no more Vertu friends, no more. In addition to the aforementioned specs, you’ve also got an OLED screen to look forward to, a slide-out SIM card tray, and the love-it-or-hate-it Vertu Concierge (read: use American Express Centurion Concierge instead). When you’re done drooling over it, go lift up that plastic couch cover your grandma uses, scrape those pennies together, and run, not walk, to your local Nokia or Torneau. We’ll see you there.

Nokia Supernova series to hit Q3 with a bang

Register Hardware reported earlier this month that images had been spotted on Nokia’s Polish website of two new phones, called the 7610 and 7510. Each were tagged with the “Supernova” name, but as quickly as the images crash-landed on the Polish website, they mysteriously disappeared. But Nokia’s now confirmed the existence of both, and added two more handsets into the mix: the 7310 and 7210.

The latter two candybar phones are near identical in appearance and rival each other with their two-megapixel cameras. The 7310 sports a TV-out port, which could be handy for playing games on your telly, and, should you get bored of that, then an FM radio and MP3 player are included for musical entertainment.

Whilst 7310 fans will be able to change the phone’s cover to match their outfit – thanks to the Xpress-On covers – anyone opting for the 7210 gets the benefit of an SD memory card slot for expandable memory.

The 7610 slider is the superior snapper of the Supernova series, because it has a 3.2-megapixel camera, whilst the 7510 has a two-megapixel grabber. Admittedly, the 7610’s zoom capability is only 8x digital zoom, so it’s nowhere close to rivalling Sony Ericsson’s C905 but it puts up a good fight with a dual-LED flash.

The slightly lower spec 7510 is the only clamshell of the group, but it features “magical light effects” that Nokia states includes an outer display that stays “hidden-until-lit”. Although the bundled 512MB Micro SD card won’t last you long, the integrated Assisted GPS should guide you to a store where you can buy a larger capacity card.

Samsung launches ‘Sleek’ fashion phone|

Trusted Reviews: While RIM’s BlackBerrys may be vastly outselling the iPhone at the moment, it will have to multiply that by around 600 per cent to catch Samsung. The reason of course is Samsung sells far more devices at the mid and lower ends of the market and does it with some style, as its latest handset demonstrates superbly…

The ‘Sleek’ (presumably nothing to do with the Creative MP3 player of the same name, despite styling similarities) is a minimalistic brushed metal candybar with a touch of the RAZR in it.

Thankfully however all Motorola similarities stop when we remember Samsung does know how to kit out a handset so you’ll get 3.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity, a 3MP camera with LED flash, 2in QVGA display and 1GB of internal memory backed up by audio and video playback, html browsing, an FM tuner, Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack

Samsung F480 diberi Nama Samsung TouchWiz

Sony Ericsson C902 Setara Kamera Digital

ASUS M930 3.5G Smartphone

With that familiar, chunky styling, comparisons between the new ASUS M930 smartphone and the Nokia E90 Communicator are inevitable. But as you'll find out shortly, the M930 is anything but a clone.

Similarities Abound

Disregarding the physical similarities, we looked at the M930 as it is. Weighing in at 158g with battery, the M930 sports a standard 12-key numeric keypad, with the usual suspects including a Call and End button, Home and Back button, two soft keys for dedicated shortcuts and a five-way navigation pad. Unfortunately, the power button is located at the top left corner of the display screen, which we found slightly inaccessible when switching profiles. There is a decent 2.0-inch 65K TFT screen and the device runs on Windows Mobile 6 Standard, which equates to a non-touch screen interface.

Our reactions were mixed upon flipping the M930 open. We were greeted with a blank internal 2.6-inch screen for around two seconds before the switch was made from external to internal display. This lag issue happened similarly when we closed the lid back and switched from the internal to external. Additionally, even with the generous 2.6-inch internal screen, the sides were not fully utilized by the interface. The full length QWERTY keyboard suffers from a problem plagued by many QWERTY keypad mobile devices, i.e. a lack of space between keys. ASUS even squeezed two soft keys and the standard five-way navigation pad at the right end of the keyboard. Even though we kind of liked the internal QWERTY keyboard for heavy text input, users would likely end up using the numeric keypad.

Awaiting the 0.1 Update

With nothing particularly outstanding on the M930, we found little to praise and conversely, nothing to fault the M930. As a HSDPA Windows Mobile device, the M930 is just as well connected as most other such devices with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0, though we would have loved GPS too. Unfortunately, the M930 is bundled with only 64MB RAM and it definitely showed in the performance tests, with slow speeds seen on multiple applications. Nonetheless, its Texas Instrument OMAP 2431 450MHz processor is sufficiently strong on performance to compensate, with no discernible lag during video playback when we tested with a 20fps video file.

The features on the M930 seems perfunctory, like the lackluster performance with the integrated 2.0-megapixel camera. Similar to the E90 Communicator, the secondary camera for video telephony is found on the top right profile of the internal screen. Documentation editing is a no-go for the M930, with just the standard ClearVue Document Viewer that supports Microsoft Word and Powerpoint perusal purposes only.

Battery life is rated at a minimum of 150 hours on standby, with up to 5 hours for 2G cellular functionality. On a mixture of phone calls and text messaging with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth thrown into the fray, we managed to get the M930 running for up to almost two days, which places it at an average level of performance.

To be Continued with Windows Mobile 6.1

While the M930 failed to dazzle in the looks or features department, its primary purpose as a mobile office device was well met, and with the upcoming upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1 available for download in June from ASUS' support website, there's perhaps more to be seen with the M930. With a wide range of connectivity options that includes HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0, coupled with a dual input method via its numeric and QWERTY keypads, the M930 fulfills the expected features for a smartphone dutifully and furthermore, is made all the more attractive by its S$898 recommended retail price tag.

Lenovo Cellulars?

Believe it or not Lenovo makes cellphones, too — they just happen to be crappy ones you probably didn’t pay much attention to since they were mostly targeted at the Chinese market. Like many before it, the company is getting out of the absurdly competitive handset market by selling its cellphone group to private equity firm Hony Capital (that’s Hony, not Sony) for a cool $100m

Indeed it is true, Lenovo does make cell phones now, and they are the 3rd largest company that makes both Cell phones and computers, according to the Wall Street Journal anyways. But, its completely true that the Lenovo company has no idea how to model all of their laptops and such. Same with the phone, the Lenovo has a distinct “I”M A LENOVO” model look.

Not to bash on the IMB-LENOVO company right now, but they just don’t make their laptops look good at all, and I don’t know how they are the top of the business line by doing this, but they are. (It’s probably because most big companies buy the high end laptops for their employees, which are actually worth the money) Lenovo just needs to take a step out there and make their stuff look good, or else, they will eventually go down.

As engadget says above, the reason why we don’t see the Lenovo phones here are because they are not really that big here, but the Hony Capital in China is more than willing to pay 100 million for those production line phones. Now, I haven’t been to China to see if that is true, nor am I planning to go see if its true, but I believe we can trust Engadget is not making this up to fool those of us in the US.

But just to make sure, if you do live in China, and see the Lenovo phones a lot, feel free to discuss it in the comment box.
And just like always comments are welcomed and appreciated
