Blackberry 8700c Review, Screenshots, Price

Calls themselves are crisp and clear, with or without headphones. As long as you keep the earpiece located precisely at your ear, there is plenty of volume controlled conveniently by the familiar Blackberry all-purpose jog wheel. The rear-mounted speaker also produces generous volume for a quiet conference room or office with only a slight hint of speakerphone gurgle, but positioning may be a problem. You have to lay the 8700c on its face if you want to hear anything, but this position blocks the front microphone.

Thanks to the EDGE connection and the new powerful Intel XScale processor, email downloads and replies transmit nano-swiftly and Web pages fill swiftly most of the time; only network glitches hold things up, not the 8700c.

The 8700c’s rated 16 day standby time is the most robust of all the Blackberrys, but the four hour talk time is about an hour shorter than other models.

There may be times where you will need to take actual screenshots of your Blackberry, perhaps to prove your high score in Brickbreaker or if you need to send a picture of your Blackberry problem to your Blackberry administrator.

Samsung Tocco F480 camera
How good is the Samsung Tocco's 5-megapixel camera? We show a selection of sample images taken with the camera to judge the quality
As well as being a rather stylish touchscreen mobile, the Samsung Tocco F480 is also a well equipped cameraphone, sporting a 5-megapixel camera on its elegant brushed metal back panel.
It's capable of taking detailed shots, at maximum 2560x1920 pixels resolution, that can be blown up for good quality regular photographic prints. In addition, the Tocco has a secondary front-facing low resolution camera for face-to-face video calls.
The 5-megapixel camera used on the Tocco has an impressive set of features. It has a sophisticated autofocus system inside, with additional face detection technology for automatically picking out faces in a busy scene, and a Smile Shot function, which is supposed to takes snaps only when it detects a smile.
The Tocco has an LED photo light rather than the more powerful xenon camera-style flash now starting to appear on higher end cameraphones. Its other features are nonetheless extensive for a cameraphone. There's an image stabiliser to eliminate hand wobble, and a wide rage of settings adjustments for tweaking the automatic metering for various lighting conditions and shooting environments.
Features The Tocco is geared up for shooting like a regular camera, with a side button to activate the camera which becomes a capture button when the camera fires up. In camera mode, the Tocco automatically swicthes into landscape shooting, with the 2.8-inch touchscreen viewfinder also taking care of camera controls.
Samsung has done some good work with the camera user interface. It's easy and generally intuitive to operate. It's touchscreen operated, with large icons for available options appearing onscreen for a few seconds after tapping the display.
The screen isn't cluttered with options; you start with the main ones along the bottom - Mode (camera, scene, camcorder), Settings (general settings), photo album and back, plus exposure and zoom sliders on the side. Pressing one of the main buttons takes you into further well-spaced sets of icons, which you can scroll down if necessary for more button options.
The camera interface works well for finger tapping, so you can select quickly and easily rather than hunting for options buried deep in menus.
The Modes menu's scenes option allows you to adjust settings to optimise shooting for different situations (portrait, sports, sunset, dawn, beach/snow, night shot). Within the settings menu, you can make plenty of changes. The shooting mode gives you access to multiple shots, panorama shots, a mosaic shot option, shooting with 'fun' frame - and the Smile shot option. The Smile Shot option is interesting and seemed to work most times, though not 100%; it's one you may want to try out but not use every time.
Other settings options include image shooting size (six options from 5-megapixels down to QVGA (320x240 pixels), flash (on/off/auto), timer (3, 5 or 10 seconds), colour effects (sepia, negative, black and white), face detection, white balance (auto, daylight, incandescent, fluorescent and cloudy), and viewfinder mode (with grid lines or icons on/off).
Further more detailed adjustments are possible too, with Wide Dynamic Range options (to boost perfomance in tricky lighting conditions), anti-shake option, choice of exposure metering, ISO settings, and picture quality.
PerformanceWe found that the Samsung Tocco's 5-megapixel camera was capable of producing some impressively detailed shots that looked great blown up. Richly detailed high res 2560x1920 pixels shots are not presented to best effect on the phone's QVGA (320x240 pixels) screen; to really appreciate the performance, copy to a PC, where you'll be able to see the finer detail and colour performance this camera is capable of.
While there's no macro/close-up mode marked separately in the features rundown, the autofocus system takes care of this automatically, with exceptionally detailed, sharply focussed close-up shots possible.
Generally, shooting is of a high quality when lighting conditions are good, though the auto metering system copes well when lighting drops off, and exposure is handled very well. Colour rendition is bright and natural, with complex tones - such as dull skies - well rendered too. Images aren't quite as stunning as the very best 5-megapixel cameraphones we've seen, but are very acceptable.
Low-light shooting indoors and outside in dark conditions are limited by the LED flash performance. Illumination range is short and flash light in-fill doesn't look as precise and effective as an equivalent xenon flash. In lower light image quality can be less impressive, and in dark situations, shots can be grainy.
The cameras processing time from shutter press to image capture takes a couple of seconds, so its sometimes tricky to nail moving subjects precisely.
Nonetheless, although it's not right up with the very best cameraphones, this 5-megapixel cameraphone is still capable of some fine quality imaging.

Sony Ericsson C905
Topline camera phone knows when you're smiling.

Sony Ericsson's Cyber-shot line of camera phones continues at CES with the C905. This high-end handset sports a 8.1 megapixel camera for taking photos that rival those taken by a very nice dedicated digital camera. The C905 employs smile recognition and face detection technology to assist with your photos, as well as Smart Contrast to help the camera best judge the needed settings for a quality picture. The device also includes image stabilization and a Xenon flash.

The C905's camera lens is tucked behind a small panel on the back of the handset. When you slide the panel down, the phone automatically slips into camera mode. The phone is a slider, so it lacks elegance if for any reason you have the whole thing open and exposed.

The C905 is considerably bulkier than the other Cyber-shot devices. This is partially due to the slider design, but the handset also features some additional goodies that likely help take up the extra space. The handset has aGPS onboard and is Wi-Fi-enabled. The C905 is also DNLA-certified, which means it is set up to be friendly with other consumer electronics for easy media transfer.

Hands on with the Sony Ericsson C905

Though we've known about the Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot for a few months, CES gave us our first opportunity to see it up close and personal. With an 8.1-megapixel camera, it is Sony Ericsson's highest resolution camera phone to date. What's more, it also has many of the same features you'd find on a standalone camera and it offers several ways to get your photos off the phone.
With such a packed feature set we were expecting a rather bulky design. And in that respect the C905 delivered. It's not as big as the Samsung Innov8, but at 4.1 by 1.9 by 1.7 inches and 4.8 ounces it's hardly as slim as the 5-megapixel Sony Ericsson C902. That trade-off is a solid feel in the hand and a sturdy slider mechanism. We also like that tapered ends that give the C905 a streamlined feel. The handset comes in sliver, black, and gold, and the company added a tender rose (aka pink) version at the show.

The display is bright and beautiful with sharp colors and graphics. Sony Ericsson typically succeeds with its displays, and the C905 is no exception. The company also has a history of over-designing its navigation controls, but we were glad to see that the C905 breaks that mold. The square navigation toggle and central OK button are spacious and tactile, as are the other navigation controls that surround it.
Like many camera phones, the C905 resembles a regular camera when viewed from behind. A sliding lens cover hides the camera lens, bright Xenon flash, and a self-portrait mirror. Sliding the cover opens starts the camera automatically. You'll also find comfortable camera ergonomics. When holding the phone horizontally, the side-mounted camera shutter and volume rocker/zoom control are right at your fingertips. We haven't seen the photo quality yet, so we'll have to save that for our full review.
The keypad buttons are relatively flush, which is not a surprise on a slider phone. Yet, the keys are pretty tactile and spacious, with large numbers and a bright backlighting. Fortunately, the memory stick micro slot rests conveniently on the left spine below the memory card slot.

As we mentioned earlier, the C905 is all about its camera. Besides the 8.1-megapixel resolution you'll also find a solid set of offerings that includes autofocus, geotagging, smile detection, face detection, a self timer, and a digital zoom. Wi-Fi is integrated as well; you can use it to upload videos directly to YouTube. Outside of the camera there's a music player, a speakerphone, stereo Bluetooth, messaging and e-mail, personal organizer applications, mass USB storage, an FM radio, and PC syncing.
At the time of this writing the C905 is available only in Europe for 499 euros or about $682. Sony Ericsson says it will bring an unlocked version of the C905 to the United States in the second quarter of this year. It is quad-band GSM and it supports both Europe and North American 3G bands. We hope to get it in soon for a full review.

Goldstriker Unveils Nokia 8800 Princess Edition

The new phone is covered in diamonds of 8.2 carats and costs 12,000 GBP

Goldstriker has announced that it plans to release a new phone to fit its lineup of luxurious devices. The new addition is a beautiful Nokia 8800 Princess Edition, which is reported to soon go on sale in the Colette store in Paris in January 2009, and, undoubtedly, it will not be anywhere close to cheap.

The reason for a high price tag on this device is that its shell comes furnished with diamonds of 8.2 carats on the front and back and will also boast a solid platinum finish. Moreover, the phone will be housed in a handmade, leather-lined, granite or marble box. The technical specifications of the handset are expected to be the same as those of the original 8800, which means that it should hit the store shelves as a pretty capable device.

Even if it comes with the same specs as the original, the phone is expected to appeal to buyers through other features, as it would seem to be a piece of jewelry rather than a practical phone. To complete the description, a word on the price should also be added. Those willing to acquire such a beauty will have to rid their pockets of no less than 12,000 GBP. That may seem like a lot of money to some, yet the device is undoubtedly able to make its owner “shine” in any situation, which makes it worth every penny.

As for its capabilities, the Nokia 8800 Princess Edition should come with integrated SVGA camera, active TFT display with 262,144 colors (208 x 208 pixels), 3D image engine for enhanced graphics, video recording and streaming and digital music player. The phone should work on the GSM 900/1800/1900 networks, while also featuring automatic switching between bands. In addition, it features Bluetooth connectivity and device-to-device synchronization.

LG Chocolate 3

The LG Chocolate 3, the successor for the highly popular Chocolate phones, is surprisingly in a slim clamshell design instead of slider form factor, which is the traditional design of Chocolate phones. LG added the 3G connectivity on the Chocolate 3 phone. Besides that, the Chocolate 3 is also packed with a 2.0-megapixel digital camera, a built-in MP3 digital music player, dual Stereo speakers, and a memory expansion slot that supports up to 8GB of memory expansion.

Samsung Alias

Samsung SCH-U740 (Samsung Alias) is one of the unique breed of Samsung phone that has dual-hinge design and has a full QWERTY keyboard for more convenient text messaging and emailing. The U740 phone has dual color LCD screen, a 1.3-megapixel digital camera, built-in digital MP3 music player, and Stereo Bluetooth connectivity.

Weighting only 3.6 oz, the Samsung SCH-U740 is a great messaging phone that you can carry around without adding too much weight in your pocket or handbag.

Samsung Eternity SGH-A867

Samsung Eternity, also know as Samsung SGH-A867, is a touchscreen phone that looks very alike to Samsung Pixon. Released for AT&T, the Samsung Eternity comes equipped with a big 3.2-inch LCD Touchscreen, a little bit smaller than Apple iPhone's 3.5-inch screen. Features and specifications wise, the Eternity phone has equivalent or better features than Apple iPhone. The Eternity phone has GPS navigation system, MP3 music player, 3.2-megapixel digital camera, Video Calling feature, High-speed 3G connectivity, and Openwave full internet browser. However, the downside of this phone is it doesn’t have Wi-Fi connectivity that allows users to browse Internet at HotSpots. Other than that, the Eternity is a perfect phone for tech-savvy users.

Samsung PIXON M8800

As Samsung’s second 8-megapixel digital camera phone (Samsung’s first 8-MP phone is Samsung INNOV8), the Samsung PIXON (a.k.a Samsung M8800), is a powerful multimedia phone that can play high-definition Movies in DivX and Xvid file formats, work as a GPS navigation system with its built-in GPS receiver, play MP3 music and output the music through its SRS (Surround Sound System) Virtual 5.1CH, and take high-quality pictures and videos with its built-in 8-megapixel digital camera / camcorder plus anti-shake, flash, and other features. Besides that, the phone also features a big 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen that supports intuitive navigation technology.

The major disappointment is the Samsung PIXON isn’t a smartphone / PDA, and it doesn’t have an array of PDA features, especially secured email solution, that BlackBerry offers. Besides that, the PIXON also lacks of Wi-Fi connectivity, which makes it less appealing to tech-savvy users.
